Frequently Asked Questions

A car logbook loan is a secured loan where you use your vehicle’s logbook (the ownership/registration document) as collateral to access cash. Your vehicle is jointly registered between you and Phoenix Capital at NTSA for the duration of the loan, but you continue to drive and use your car as normal throughout the repayment period. Once the loan is fully repaid, the logbook is transferred back into your name alone.

  • Original, valid vehicle logbook registered in your name (or a notarized consent letter if it’s registered to someone else)
  • National ID and KRA PIN
  • Valid comprehensive insurance certificate for the vehicle
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • Proof of income (payslip, bank statements, or M-Pesa statements — usually the last 3–6 months)
  • The vehicle should generally be in good running condition and under a certain age (most Kenyan lenders cap this around 15 years, though this can vary by vehicle type)
  • Applicants are usually required to be between 18 and 65–70 years old

Your loan amount is based on the current market/forced-sale value of your vehicle. Phoenix Capital offers financing of up to 80% of your vehicle’s value — higher than the 30–50% many traditional lenders offer. You can also combine several vehicle logbooks into one loan if you own more than one car.

Logbook loans at Phoenix Capital attract an interest rate of 4% per month on a reducing balance, meaning you pay interest only on the outstanding principal, which decreases with every payment you make.

Once you submit complete documents, your vehicle is valued by our assessment team, an offer is issued, and — once accepted — funds are disbursed to your bank account or mobile money. Most logbook loans in the Kenyan market are processed within 24 hours or less once all paperwork and the vehicle inspection are complete.

Yes. Unlike selling your car or a hire-purchase arrangement, a logbook loan lets you keep driving your vehicle daily — for work, business, or personal use — while you repay the loan in the background.

As with any secured loan, missed payments attract penalty charges, and continued default can lead to repossession of the vehicle, which may then be sold to recover the outstanding balance. We encourage borrowers experiencing repayment difficulty to contact us early so we can discuss revised repayment arrangements before the account falls into serious arrears.

  1. Submit your application online or at a branch with the required documents.
  2. Our team values your vehicle.
  3. You receive a loan offer detailing the amount, interest, and repayment schedule.
  4. On acceptance, the logbook is jointly registered with Phoenix Capital at NTSA.
  5. Funds are disbursed to your account.
  6. You repay in the agreed installments.
  7. On full repayment, the logbook is transferred back to your name.
