— How This Loan is Different
What Is Asset Finance?
Asset finance is a structured funding facility that lets you acquire a vehicle, machine or piece of equipment and pay for it in instalments, rather than settling the full purchase price upfront. In most cases, the financed asset itself stands as security for the facility, which means you get to put the asset to work — generating income or improving efficiency — from day one, while your cash reserves stay intact for stock, payroll, rent and the everyday costs of running a business.
In Kenya, asset finance is widely used to fund commercial and personal vehicles, construction and earthmoving machinery, agricultural equipment, medical and laboratory equipment, ICT and office equipment, and energy installations such as solar and backup power systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is asset finance and how is it different from a personal loan?
Asset finance is tied to a specific vehicle, machine or piece of equipment, which typically serves as security for the facility. This generally allows for higher amounts and longer terms than an unsecured personal loan.
What assets can I finance?
Depending on eligibility, you can finance cars, commercial vehicles (pickups, trucks, buses, vans, taxis), boda bodas and other motorcycles, and business assets such as machinery, agricultural equipment, and office equipment.
What deposit do I need to put down?
Deposits typically range from about 10% to 30% of the asset’s value, depending on the type, age, and condition of the asset. A lower deposit is usually available for newer vehicles or well-established equipment categories.
How much of the asset's value can be financed?
Phoenix Capital typically finances 60% to 90% of an asset’s value, with newer vehicles and lower-risk assets qualifying for financing toward the higher end of that range.
What documents do I need to apply?
- National ID and KRA PIN
- Proof of income — payslips, or 3–6 months’ bank/M-Pesa statements for business owners
- A proforma invoice or quotation for the asset from a recognized dealer or supplier
- A reasonably clean CRB record
- For vehicles, an active NTSA TIMS account to facilitate registration
- For businesses, registration documents and basic financial records
What is the interest rate and repayment period?
Because asset finance covers many different asset types, deposits, and terms, pricing is assessed individually and disclosed clearly in your offer before you sign — rather than a single flat rate. Repayment periods commonly run up to 4 years for general assets, and can extend to 36–96 months for larger commercial vehicles, depending on the financing structure agreed.
Who owns the asset during the loan period?
The financed asset serves as your security. For vehicles, it’s jointly registered with Phoenix Capital at NTSA until the loan is fully repaid, similar to a logbook loan. For equipment and machinery, a corresponding security registration applies. Once you’ve completed all repayments, full ownership is transferred into your name.
How long does approval take?
Timelines depend on the asset type and how complete your documentation is — particularly the dealer’s proforma invoice. Straightforward personal vehicle financing can move quickly once documents and the invoice are confirmed, while larger commercial or business asset financing may take a few business days for full verification.
What happens if I default on repayments?
Since the financed asset is the primary security, continued default can lead to its repossession to recover the outstanding balance. As with our other secured products, we encourage you to reach out early if you’re struggling with repayments so we can discuss suitable arrangements before an account falls into serious arrears.
