Frequently Asked Questions
What is a bodaboda loan?
A bodaboda loan helps you acquire a motorcycle (or tuk-tuk) for business use by paying an initial deposit and financing the balance over an agreed repayment period, rather than paying the full purchase price upfront.
What deposit is required?
Deposits for motorcycle financing in the Kenyan market commonly range from about KSh 15,000 to KSh 25,000 (or roughly 20% of the bike’s value), depending on whether the bike is new or second-hand. Confirm the exact deposit for your preferred model with our team.
What documents do I need?
- National ID and KRA PIN
- Valid driving license
- M-Pesa statements (commonly the last 3–6 months)
- One or more guarantors, along with their ID copies
- A registered Safaricom line that’s been active for a reasonable period
How is ownership handled during the loan period?
The motorcycle’s logbook is held jointly (or registered in Phoenix Capital’s name together with yours) until the loan is fully repaid. Once you’ve cleared all installments, full ownership and the logbook are transferred to you.
How long is the repayment period, and how do I pay?
Repayment periods commonly range from about 12 to 18 months (sometimes structured in weekly invoices, with an option to pay daily), depending on the agreement.
What is the interest rate?
Because a bodaboda loan finances the purchase of a new asset (rather than borrowing against a motorcycle you already own outright), its pricing is set based on the specific model, deposit, and repayment term — this will be clearly disclosed in your offer before you sign. If you already own a motorcycle outright and want to borrow against its logbook instead, that would fall under our standard logbook loan terms (4% per month).
What happens if the motorcycle is involved in an accident or is stolen?
Report it immediately to Phoenix Capital and to the nearest police station, and share the police abstract/OB number with us as soon as possible so we can guide you on next steps, including any insurance claim process.
How do I apply?
Visit a branch (or apply online where available) with your ID, KRA PIN, driving license, and guarantor details, pay the required deposit, choose your motorcycle model, and — once approved — ride out with your bike the same day or within a few hours in most cases.
